The Story Behind Strawberry Fields: From Tiny Sketches to a Botanical Collection

It started with a simple truth: I absolutely love strawberries.

There has always been something magical about them to me. Maybe it’s the little white blossoms that appear before the berries, the curling leaves and vines, or the tiny seeds covering each strawberry. They instantly remind me of gardens, sunshine, wandering outside, and those slower moments where you stop to appreciate the small details in nature.

So naturally, I started drawing them.

At first, it was just a handful of little botanical motifs, a strawberry here, a blossom there, some leaves and vines to pull everything together. I didn’t necessarily know exactly where they would end up, but that’s one of my favorite parts of creating. Sometimes you follow an idea simply because it sparks joy and you see where it wants to go.

Before long, those little strawberry illustrations started growing into something much bigger: the Strawberry Fields collection.

As a surface pattern designer, I love exploring all the different ways artwork can transform. The same tiny illustration can become part of a repeating pattern, a piece of stationery, fabric, home decor, or something completely unexpected. Something is exciting about watching a collection take shape and seeing each pattern find its own personality while still belonging together.

While I was arranging the strawberries, blossoms, and vines into patterns, I kept noticing how much fun it would be to color all those little details. The same things I love drawing, starting with the tiny leaves, delicate flowers, and organic shapes, are also the things that make coloring feel peaceful and relaxing.

That little idea turned into three printable Strawberry Fields coloring pages that I created to share with you.

These pages are a little invitation to slow down, grab your favorite colors, and spend a little time creating just because. There’s no right way to color them, no pressure to make anything perfect — just a quiet moment with some strawberries and your imagination.

The Strawberry Fields collection is still growing behind the scenes. I’ve been creating repeating patterns, placing artwork, and exploring where these little strawberries might bloom next.

That’s one of my favorite things about the creative process: you never really know where a tiny idea might lead when you permit yourself to follow it.

Sometimes you start with a simple strawberry sketch.

And somehow you end up with an entire field.

Happy creating,

Petra
