For years, when I went hiking, I was always lookin

For years, when I went hiking, I was always looking for something I could wood burn.

A texture.

An animal.

A composition that could live on wood.

And most of my work still feels like that, alive, grounded, pulled straight from what I’ve seen.

But something shifted.

Three weeks into immersion, and now I’m walking the same trails… differently.

Not just what could I burn?

But what could this become?

A collection.

A pattern.

A series of motifs that belong together.

I was at Lesesne State Forest the other day, just wandering, and everywhere I look feels like it could be part of something bigger.

Not just a single piece.

A system.

It’s subtle, but it changes everything.

Some pieces take their time. This one started wit

This one started with a quiet scene and slowly turned into a whole little forest gathering.

Right now, the background is burned in, the animals are outlined, and the details are just beginning. Pyrography is a slow craft. Every line, every texture, every shadow happens one burn at a time.

I always think of it like drawing with patience.

The animals will eventually get fur texture, the owl will gain feather layers, and the forest elements will deepen into the wood.

For now, it’s somewhere between sketch and story.

And honestly, that middle stage is one of my favorite parts.

Very productive. Very intentional. Very “look at me building something.”

The dogs… had a different plan.

Rolling. Digging. Full-body chaos like they just discovered the greatest thing on earth.

Remi especially decided this was his moment.

Honestly? Hard to argue with that level of joy.

Meanwhile, I’m over here like, “cool cool cool… I’ll just be over here trying to keep this somewhat usable.”

The walks.

The movement.

The quiet time outside.

Strange how much those things hold everything together.

and going outside looking for something.

Same trail.

Same trees.

Same ground.

When you start walking with the intention of seeing possibilities, you stop looking at things as individual objects.

You start seeing relationships.

How shapes repeat.

How colors echo each other.

How one small detail could become part of something much larger.

Today wasn’t about hiking miles.

It was about paying attention.

And honestly… that might be the bigger shift.
