Hippo Earflap Beanie

Hippo Earflap Beanie

I love crochet animal hats and crochet character hats, like this Hippo Earflap Beanie. Back in 2011, I created what felt like a million character hats, and amazingly enough not only was I able to reduce a bunch of debt I had but provide an amazing Christmas for my kids. And let’s be honest, they are fun to make, and kids and adults love to wear them. Not only are they great for Halloween but they can be worn anytime you like!

Materials:
Hook: H (5.00mm)
Medium worsted weight yarn – I use Vanna’s Choice or Impeccable Yarn!

Fasten off, if you are going to add a tassel you can leave a tail if not weave in.
For the second earflap, count 21 st to the right (from the back seam), attach yarn, and repeat earflap directions.

With pink colors, sc around hat and earflaps. Ears – Make 2

Teeth (make 2)

With white, join to the longer part of the pink piece. The placement of the teeth is up to you – close together or further apart.

Row 1: after join, sc in the same space, sc 2 more, ch 1, turn {3}, ch 1, turn {3}, fasten off. {3}
Row 2: sc across, ch 1, turn {3}
Row 3: sc across, fasten off. {3}

Nostrils: Embroider with gray 2 nostrils on the top of the pink piece (see picture)

Making Tassels

Cut chosen yarn for tassels about 40 inches in length. You could go longer if you want – I don’t recommend shorter because braiding will reduce the size a little. Depending on how many colors you want into your tassels will decide the number of strands you need. Remember that it needs to be able to be divided by 3 if you are braiding them so you can have the right proportions for the braid.

Each tassel:
2 colors: hold 2 strands together and cut equal pieces 6 or 12 times 3 colors: hold 3 strands together and cut equal pieces 6 times. Fold the yarn in half; put on hook pull through earflap; pull tails through the loop Pull tight Braid or finish however you prefer

Love the Hippo Earflap Beanie but don’t know how to crochet? No worries, you can order one!

Crochet a chain to desired length to attach leprechaun and shamrock. Attach the chain to the inside of the head before stuffing and sewing hat to head.

Finishing the Leprechaun

Stuff Hat lightly, sew to top of Head as shown in picture. With Black yarn, embroider eyes and mouth. Use acrylic yarn to attach and create the beard and hair for the leprechaun. I used Caron simply soft, latch-hooked it on and tied it in a knot. When finished I combed the yarn to create wavy beard and hair.

Row 1: ch 2, 2 sc in second ch from hook: 2 sc
Row 2: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in next 2 sc: 4 sc
Row 3: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc: 6 sc
Row 4: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across- 6 sc

Row 6: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across- 8 sc
Row 7: ch 1, turn, skip 1, (sc, hdc, dc) in next sc, (dc, hdc, sc) in next sc, sl st in next sc, ch 1, skip 1, (sc, hdc, dc) in next sc, (dc, hdc, sc) in next sc, sl st in next sc, finish off.

Sew 4 leaves together to shape shamrock; this gives you 2 shamrock leaves. Then sew together the shamrock leaves to create a pillow, fill with fiberfill as you go. Attach the open end of the crochet chain to the shamrock leaves.
