Build a fort and color

Build a fort and color

You may have jokingly said, you’ll build a fort and color to get some relaxation and peace in your world there’s an underlying truth to this joke:

Sometimes you need to shut out the world to focus on you. You’re a limited resource and unless you take time to renew yourself, you will quickly get burned out. Let’s explore the fun world that awaits you in coloring.

Coloring Therapy

Coloring is a type of therapy. As such, it often gets confused with art therapy, which is a more involved process that depends on the relationship between a client and therapist. However, coloring helps to reduce anxiety, provide focus, mental clarity, a break from negative thoughts and behaviors, provides an alternative method to meditation, improves reality orientation, foster self-awareness, explore feelings, and a host of other benefits.

Stress and Anxiety One of the most amazing aspects of coloring is that it drastically decreases stress and anxiety. For this reason, it can help with insomnia and post-traumatic stress disorder. PTSD occurs when a person experiences triggers that can bring them back into reliving a traumatic event. Coloring takes the focus off the amygdala, which is a part of the brain thatís responsible for fear. Because coloring allows for focus, it thereby gets rid of other free-floating thoughts that tend to cause stress. In addition, coloring is relaxing, which produces the opposite effect of stress. For this reason, coloring can help with insomnia if done a few minutes before bedtime.

An alternative to Meditation

For people who can’t seem to get into meditation, coloring provides the same benefits. This is because coloring takes the focus off thoughts and provides mindfulness. This allows the brain a way to take a break, which is what meditation accomplishes.

Happiness

Coloring helps to increase positivity by creating something truly individualistic. Despite coloring pages that are already designed with patterns, people get to choose the colors, color intensity, and style of blending they want to use for their creations. Precise lines made from color pencils, markers, and pens helps to create order. All of this, together, promotes happiness and a sense of accomplishment. Healing Coloring brings back happy emotions from a simpler time. Being a kid again helps to ease the tensions of daily responsibilities, and it helps people connect with their inner child. Often, current problems can be traced to the past. By including the inner child in coloring, people can reconnect with that child to begin healing.

Memory Loss

The old adage, Use it or lose it, is true for the brain. The less we use our brains, the more at-risk we are for Alzheimerís and dementia. Coloring can help to prevent or delay the onset of dementia and other memory-loss issues.

Productivity

Coloring helps to strengthen organizational and problem-solving skills because it utilizes the frontal lobe, which is the part of the brain thatís responsible for focus, concentration, creativity, and logic. This helps people to be more productive. It has been shown that the use of color gets the creative juices flowing. This can help with writing and math.

It might just be true that all you really need to know you learned in kindergarten. You certainly weren’t that stressed in kindergarten. It’s important to note that you must allow yourself to be in the moment when coloring to enjoy its benefits. It won’t do you much good to color while secretly thinking about other things or feeling guilty that you’re not working. It is important to balance your schedule between work and play or you will quickly find your inner child sabotaging your efforts. Even if you didn’t particularly enjoy coloring as a child, give it a go. You might be surprised.

So go ahead, build a fort and color.

April Coloring Pages

April Coloring Pages

April showers bring May flowers but I am hoping for a lot more sunshine and while rainy clouds are part of the April coloring pages theme – so are the flowers.

The pages include monthly and weekly overviews, gratitude pages, goal and money tracker, and meal planner. I find that when I am stumped on what I need to focus on, coloring the pages can help me find those answers.

I was so excited about spring that I sprained my ankle while running on one of my favorite trails – so instead I’ll be sitting on my futon watching television and coloring my pages – I mean I could think of worse things, right? I am hoping that I heal rather quickly because man when it is warmer outside – I don’t love to be couped up especially since my bestie and I have roller skating goals!

Just like every month, the April coloring creatives bundle also includes patterned coloring pages, mandala coloring pages, and seasonal pages. There are plenty of times during the week where I find myself watching TV and coloring at the same time.

I recently launched my own private little community for The Rebels Den and all of my Art Shenanigans – Including a monthly get-together where we will art + chat for a few hours. You can sign up here!

My new coloring book is done!

My new coloring book is done!

Spirit Animal Mandala Coloring Book was inspired by my own connection to my spirit animals and love for mandala designs.  Each illustration was hand drawn and contains 33 animal mandala pages to color and relieve stress.

I feel very connected to the Wolf, Bat and the Butterfly as well as the Dragon and Raven. Each of them bringing their own message to me in some way. The wolf for example, reminds me to stay connected to my intuition, remember what brings me freedom and that we are social creatures that need connection. The Raven on the other hand brings to the forefront some of the inner darkness that tends to hide the conflict when I should be facing in so that I can continue to heal. And the Butterfly is always about transformation, when change is about to happen and I will or am in a cocoon ready to emerge again.

It’s fascinating that when we pay attention to your surroundings and acknowledge the animals we see and we wonder what their message might be all the things we can learn about ourselves.

Each coloring page will help you actively meditate while your responsibilities will seem to fade away and you stay in the moment of what is. Petra Monaco is helping people to free themselves from the stories that are holding them back to live a life that feels amazing.

I had a lot of fun creating these pages and even turned the Wolf Mandala into a painting and my partner is turning the eagle mandala into his own version of a big canvas painting. I can’t wait to see his completed version.

In this coloring book, Petra encourages you to connect with a spirit animal and your inner source. Sit and listen to what animal speaks to your the most and start coloring the page. If you’re so inclined take notes and write them around the mandala page of the messages you received.
